AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Randall County is a part of the High Plains Water District with many residents relying on private wells for their water source.

High Plains Water District General Manager Jason Coleman says there are more private wells than irrigation wells being drilled in Randall County due to new housing developments.

Coleman adds about half of the private wells in Randall County use the deeper Dockum Aquifer as its water source verses the Ogallala.

This has made the water district provide extra resources to study the aquifer.

“The Dockum Aquifer is below that and what we see indicates that probably around half of the domestic water wells in Randall County are in the deeper or Dockum Aquifer,” says Coleman.
