East Jefferson Avenue is rising.

Literally.

One bus stop at a time.

The Detroit Department of Transportation began installing 21 bus platforms along E. Jefferson as part of a pilot program to improve public transit in the city.

Buses will no longer cut across bike lanes and parking spots to pull into bus stops. Instead, raised platforms extend from the sidewalk-curb to the traffic lane, so buses simply stop, let riders on and keep moving. In addition, gradual ramps on either side of the platform section that crosses the bike lane allows bikers to continue riding through elevated stops.

Robert Cramer, Executive Director of Transit at DDOT, said that the new platforms aim to enhance passengers' experiences and reduce wait times with the added benefit of increasing biker safety.
