Hamilton-area residents are spending less time getting to work this year — but those commutes remain among the longest in the country , according to Statistics Canada.

New data from the federal agency suggests the average commute for residents in the Hamilton census metropolitan area — which includes Burlington and Grimsby — was 29.1 minutes in May. That is an improvement of more than a minute from the 30.6 average reported at the same time last year.

That still leaves Hamilton-area residents well above the national commuting average of 26.7 minutes — although about on par with the Ontario-wide average (29.5 minutes.)
