WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — The Buffalo Guinea Pig Mafia Rescue is stepping in to help with a hoarding case in California involving hundreds of guinea pigs.

The Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue responded in July to what was believed to be a hoarding case with about 200 guinea pigs. Once inside the home, rescuers found nearly double that number — closer to 400 animals.

Several were found dead, food and water were scarce, and many of the surviving females were pregnant. Los Angeles rescue officials said the estimate for the number of guinea pigs from the case could grow to nearly 1,000 by November.
