A man from Lancashire has been arrested after racist and abusive messages were sent to professional footballer Jess Carter on social media during the women's Euros last month.
A man, 59-year-old from Great Harwood, was arrested on Thursday 28 August, by Lancashire Police on suspicion of Malicious Communications in relation to some of the messages. He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
It comes after police received reports that racist and abusive messages had been sent to the England defender Jess Carter during the UEFA Women’s Euros, in July 2025.
Following the reports, the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) launched an investigation, working in partnership with social media companies to identify the people responsible.
