WEST, Texas (KWTX) - If you’re from West, Texas you might know the name Dr. George Smith.

On Monday, Dr. Smith will mark 50 years serving the community!

Since 1975 he’s been the team physician for West ISD. All these years, he’s been dedicated to the student athletes he helps.

His commitment to helping others has taken him across states. He was deployed during Hurricane Katrina with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

A day in his career he won’t ever forget: April 17th, 2013 the West Fertilizer Plant Explosion. Dr. Smith rushed over to a nearby nursing home to help evacuate residents while the fire burned, he never expected an explosion soon after.
