CHEYENNE — Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins urged members of the Wyoming Legislature to maintain sales tax exemptions for data centers in the state, some of which are owned by multi-billion-dollar international companies like Microsoft and Meta.
He said the benefits these companies bring to the state — particularly for areas like Cheyenne and Laramie County, where several data centers are in operation and others are being built — are greater than the benefits the increased tax dollars would bring to the state in this growing industry.
In a report from the Wyoming Department of Revenue, two data centers in Wyoming averaged an exemption of more than $22.5 million in 2023. The Department of Revenue surveyed five data centers at the time, but only received responses from two.
