High waves and strong currents will create life-threatening conditions across Michigan's Great Lakes for swimmers and boaters, the National Weather Service said as it announced advisories for Thursday, Aug. 28, through the morning of Aug. 29.

"Wind and wave action will cause currents on the lakeshore. Swimmers should not enter the water," the National Weather Service said. "Currents can carry swimmers away from shore through a sand bar and along structures extending out into the lake."

Beach hazards and small craft advisories are in place along areas of Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior.

Around Michigan's thumb, from Huron County to St. Clair County, officials forecast the maximum wave heights up to 8 feet in Lake Huron with wind gusts up to 29 knots (33 mph).
