NEWPORT, N.C. (WBTV) - Eight students were hospitalized and two others needed care on Wednesday after they ate a candy-like substance allegedly given to them by another child at a North Carolina middle school.
Sister-station WITN reported that the incident happened at Broad Creek Middle School in Carteret County on Aug. 27.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office told WITN that the hospitalized students appeared to have been alright later Wednesday, and that authorities were waiting on test results to come back to determine what caused the adverse reactions.
One student told WITN that the situation came as a surprise to her.
"I mean it was kind of scary,” she said. “I feel like it wouldn’t be something that you would have thought would happen.”
