Mayor Wu and School Superintendent Mary Skipper said today they are boosting training for school-bus drivers and planning heightened supervision of the bus contractor - including unannounced visits to bus yards - to ensure only qualified drivers are behind the wheel as school starts next week.

Wu and Skipper spoke at a press conference about an independent consultant's review of how contractor Transdev works, following the April death of Lens Arthur Joseph, 5, under the wheels of the bus that had just dropped him and his cousin off outside their home on Washington Street in Hyde Park.

"The driver involved on April 28 should not have been on the road that day," Wu said.
