South Ayrshire Council needs to agree more flexible contributions from housing developers over and above extending schools, councillors have said. ‌

The issue was raised at a meeting of the Service and Partnerships Performance Panel last week. ‌

Developer contributions are agreed as part of the planning process when a development will impact on other council services, such as increasing school rolls beyond capacity and increasing traffic congestion. ‌

But they can only be agreed if certain criteria are met.

The contribution must be needed in order to make a development ‘acceptable’, serve a planning purpose and be directly related to the effect of the development on infrastructure.
