BANGOR, Maine — Calling all wildlife watchers! The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is looking for volunteers across the state to report their white-tailed deer sightings.
It’s a community science project called “Deer Spy,” that aims to help wildlife biologists manage Maine’s deer population.
To get involved in Deer Spy, when you see deer, record these observations:
Location
Date and time
The number of does
The number of bucks
The number of fawns
Then you can submit the data online or by mail to MDIFW in Bangor.
The project helps the state understand how many deer are being born.
This informs how many antlerless deer hunting permits MDIFW gives out.
