STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) -- A former State College resident who was convicted of murdering a classmate in 1983 has been granted a new trial, according to court documents.
Subramanyam Vedam was convicted of murdering Thomas Kinser. Although he continued to maintain his innocence, a retrial in February 1988 found him convicted of first-degree murder again.
New evidence was presented to the courts in July 2024, and more than a year later, Vedam was granted a new trial.
In that time, the court "thoroughly and extensively" considered whether the Commonwealth suppressed evidence in the 1988 trial. They also reviewed whether the Commonwealth failed to correct testimony that it knew or should have known was materially false.
