BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) - The LSU Vet School's acts of heroism after Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago made short and long-term impacts to save animals after the disaster.

LSU School of Veterinary Medicine quietly turned into a full-scale emergency response center for animals who had been left behind when families had to evacuate.

Ginger Guttner, LSU Vet School communications manager, was at LSU during Katrina. She said they never expected to be saving as many animals as they did.

"We thought we were just going to have like 100 animals, but we went from zero to 500 animals in 48 hours," said Guttner.

To help the animals, faculty, students, and other members of staff set up makeshift hospitals, managed over 2,000 pets, and ran daily rescue convoys into disaster zones.
