Hamilton has had five heat warnings so far this year, which is within the average range, according to Environment Canada — but the warnings are getting longer.

"What was more peculiar this year, though, was the duration of each event," said Steven Flisfeder, a meteorologist with the weather agency.

For a heat warning to be issued by Environment Canada, temperatures must hit at least 31 C during the day and at least 20 C at night for two consecutive days or more.

Flisfeder said most warnings this summer have been more than three days long, with the longest lasting around seven days.

"Whereas most of the time when we issue heat alerts, the duration is typically about two to three days," said Flisfeder.
