CityHousing Hamilton will begin demolishing the long-vacant Jamesville townhouses this month, in anticipation of a new housing development.

"I am very pleased to see the demolition begin — the north end neighbourhood deserves to see this project completed and this is the first concrete step in that direction in many years," said Mayor Andrea Horwath in a news release Friday.

The demolition comes a decade after tenants of the city's 91-unit, social housing development were evicted.

The city had expected to begin redeveloping the site right away, with condos and townhouses available at market prices as well as affordable and supportive units. There will be 475 units in total, says the city's website .
