CHEBOYGAN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has temporarily closed the Cheboygan Lock and Dam due to an unexpected issue.

Per an Aug. 28 news release, contractors were on-site Thursday morning, but officials said there is not yet a timeline for repairs.

“A missing sill plate on a downstream miter gate is preventing operation,” said Richard Hill, district supervisor for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. “We are hoping to get the issue resolved quickly.”

The facility, located in the city of Cheboygan in Cheboygan County, will remain closed until further notice.

For updates on the closure, the DNR advises the public to visit Michigan.gov/DNRClosures or call the Cheboygan Field Office at 231-627-9011.
