MICHIGAN, USA — Michigan has seen a "promising" three-year decline in infectious syphilis cases, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

MDHHS said the state has seen a 29% decline in reported cases of infectious syphilis overall since 2021, a downward trend that's held fast through the first half of 2025.

Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties are experiencing the most significant declines in syphilis rates.

Officials said while the news reflects progress made in recent years, Michigan's overall syphilis rates remain historically high compared to a decade ago.

Nationally and in Michigan, rates rose between 2014-2021. MDHHS said while syphilis continues to pose a public health challenge, recent data suggests Michigan could be turning a corner.
