President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that there is a “concept” for issuing tariff rebate checks to Americans, Newsweek reported.

Responding to a reporter who asked about the issue during a White House cabinet meeting, the president said, “We have a lot of money coming in. It’s coming in tremendous numbers. There’s a concept of making a dividend to the people of this country who have paid a lot of taxes and got nothing for it.”

Trump continued, “There’s a possibility. Primarily we want to pay down debt, but there’s a possibility that we take a piece of it and make a dividend to the people.”

Newsweek said that duties collected under Trump’s tariff policies have exploded this year, generating a historic level of revenue for the U.S. Treasury.
