CHICAGO — City officials are bracing for the possible deployment of federal troops despite having no communication from the White House about what the troops would be directed to do once in the city.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, Supt. Larry Snelling and other top city officials told reporters Thursday they will not assist federal agents and troops with immigration enforcement or with “illegal activities” such as arresting or policing residents.

Officials, however, did not outline specific plans for how local police would respond if troops are deployed.
