PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A South Kingstown town councilor is out from his former spokesperson job with Providence Public Schools amid allegations of assault, 12 News has learned. The case is heading to a trial next month.

Suzanne Ouellette, PPSD's director of communications, told 12 News that Jay Wegimont doesn't work for the district anymore, but declined to provide any additional information.

"We cannot comment further on personnel matters," she said.

Wegimont faces a charge of simple assault after allegedly leaving a Town Council meeting in progress and assaulting Narragansett GOP Chairman Anthony D'Ellena in the hallway.

Wegimont, 34, was previously on administrative leave from his job with PPSD, though it's unclear if that was paid or unpaid. He also faced calls by the Rhode Isl
