Newcastle United have agreed a club record deal for Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade in a move that swings the door open for Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak.

The Magpies are poised to finalise a £60.5m (£65m including add-ons) package for Woltemade, who was flying into Tyneside on Thursday night to undergo a medical as Newcastle race to complete the deal before their weekend game at Leeds United.

It is a huge move for Newcastle who have previously had eight bids for strikers rejected but have kept negotiations with the 23-year-old and his club under wraps until everything was tied up.

It gives Liverpool encouragement to launch a second bid for Isak, which The i Paper reported was certain to come before Monday’s deadline day, but does not guarantee the move will happen.
