LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for Houghton and Ontonagon counties following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The storm damaged roads, infrastructure, and overwhelmed local response efforts.

Initially, local resources were able to manage the situation, but as the damage became more severe, additional help became necessary.

With the emergency declaration, all available state resources are now being provided to support local response and recovery work.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division will coordinate these efforts at the state level.

On July 23, 2025, Houghton County experienced up to 4 inches of rain in just four hours.
