A significant sinkhole has closed a busy intersection in Toronto's east end following a water main break late Wednesday night. The incident occurred at the intersection of Coxwell Avenue and Cosburn Avenue, leading to street flooding and damage. City crews have been on-site since early Thursday morning to conduct emergency repairs and assist affected residents.
The City of Toronto reported that the water main break resulted in flooding that impacted at least two nearby homes, causing basement flooding. A city spokesperson stated, "City crews have been working through the night and remain on-site to carry out emergency repairs, help prevent further flooding and support impacted residents."
As repairs continue, the city has not provided an estimated timeline for when the intersection will reopen. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes during this time. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has also announced detours for the 87 Cosburn and 70 O'Connor bus routes due to the ongoing repairs.
Residents in the area have expressed concern about the situation. Wayne Leek, a local resident, observed the road closures while walking his dog. He noted, "There was a lot of sand that looked like there have been a fair amount of water flow in the gutter and even up on the sidewalk." He described seeing pooling water and cracks forming in the intersection, adding, "I heard a strange kind of knocking noise. And then that’s when the asphalt collapsed into that hole."
Videos and photos shared by residents show water gushing from the sinkhole and flooding parts of the street. The city is urging residents to remain patient as crews work to resolve the issue and restore normal conditions.
