ASHLAND, Mass. (WBZ) - The typical buzz surrounding the first day of school took on a whole new meaning for students at David Mindess Elementary School in Ashland, Massachusetts.

“When I was in, I saw kids crying coming in, because they were stung,” a student, whose name was not provided, said.

Students getting off the bus outside of school Wednesday morning unknowingly disturbed an underground yellowjacket nest.

“As they started attacking, everyone was trying to run to the exit and they kept following them,” fifth grader Akshara Nair said.

Akshara was stung several times on her ear, head and leg. She described the stings as a “zap, but even more painful.”

The school’s nursing staff and first responders began treating 40 students and a couple of teachers.
