Edmonton police shared a rare glimpse into gang activity in the capital city on Wednesday.

Authorities estimate there are about 2,000 to 3,000 people in Edmonton involved in various gangs or organized crime groups.

And about a quarter of the city’s homicides are linked to those groups, they say.

The Edmonton Police Service is urging residents to be aware and alert.

“We talk for a need for people to be aware of their surroundings, we talk about for people to be aware of what’s being communicated to them,” said EPS Sgt. Ryan Ferry at a presentation for downtown groups, which CityNews attended.
