Let’s talk about oil. It’s something Long Beach has been doing for more than a century now.

In case you missed it, oil is a bad boy these days. Sucking it up out of the ground is a pain, and burning it for fuel causes the kind of pollution many blame for global warming and all the attendant bad climate change things we’re experiencing.

But there’s still one positive thing about oil – it generates money. And we all know that money is a great reason for a fight.

Last week, the Long Beach City Council gave the state notice it’s ready for another fight. Third District Councilwoman Kristina Duggan brought the issue forward, noting that the city’s Tidelands Fund – which pays for pretty much everything near the water – is going underwater as oil and gas revenue declines.
