BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A woman accused of killing her 3-year-old foster son was appointed a new attorney Thursday after the Kern County Public Defender's Office said it could no longer represent her.

Greg Mitts now represents Margaret Eichhorst through the Indigent Defense Program -- the county’s other option for defendants who can’t afford to retain private counsel.

At Thursday's hearing, Mitts said he needs to first meet with his client then prepare a motion to postpone her trial. She's currently scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 29 on charges of first-degree murder and assault on a child under 8 resulting in death.
