Igot a postcard from the Jennifer Savage campaign that says “Housing is a human right." I agree with that sentiment, but her voting record on city council tells a different story.

This week, Missoula’s largest homeless shelter, the Johnson Street Shelter, is closing its doors. Councilmember Savage voted to shut it down without any alternative shelter plans in place. As a result, we’re already seeing more people sleeping on the streets or in their vehicles.

To make matters worse, Savage and the city council majority voted for Ordinance 12.60, which imposes fines on people living in their vehicles, even when they have no other shelter options. That’s not treating housing as a human right. It is punishing people for being unhoused. These kinds of policies do more to criminalize homelessness
