PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After nearly a year of extensive renovations to its century-old structure, a beloved Providence entertainment venue is making its long-awaited encore.
Situated in the heart of Federal Hill, the historic building was originally constructed as the Columbus Theatre in 1926 and has since served as a centerpiece of the city’s arts and culture scene.
According to the Providence Preservation Society, it was known as the Uptown Theatre from 1929 to 1962. For years, it served as a stage for Italian plays and films before more recently becoming a popular locale for music, comedy and community events.
Last summer, the venue closed its curtains seemingly for good, ending 12 years of operation under the Columbus Theatre name.
