Cigarette butts are polluting Lake Erie, prompting local efforts to clean up the shoreline and protect the environment.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is leading initiatives to address the issue of cigarette butt pollution along Lake Erie. The organization is working to educate the public on the importance of proper disposal to prevent litter from entering the water.
"It's very important to us to keep the environment clean, especially for the animals, the wildlife here," said Marissa Irons, an Erie mother who regularly walks along the lake with her daughter.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has provided marina operators with receptacles specifically for cigarette butts. These receptacles aim to prevent pollution by recycling the waste into composite lumber.
