Akron-based FirstEnergy says it has carried out a round of layoffs affecting fewer than 50 employees in non-customer-facing support roles.

The layoffs occurred Aug. 27 in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey, said Jennifer Young, a spokeswoman for the utility.

"Like many companies, we regularly evaluate our operations and our workforce just to make sure that we're aligned to support our current business priorities," Young said.

She said number of people laid off "represents less than half a percent of our workforce."

The company has about 11,400 employees between Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey, Young said.
