GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) - Mayberry Park celebrated its grand reopening Thursday, marking a significant moment for the community as city leaders and residents gathered to honor its historical legacy.
Originally built in the 1920s, Mayberry Park served as one of the few recreational areas for Black children during segregation. The park's renovation, costing $3.2 million, was funded by the City of Greenville and generous donors.
"This is not just political. This is about the people," said Lillian Brock Flemming, a member of the Greenville City Council.
"Can we bring back Mayberry Park? And keep the name? And that’s exactly what we did through the planning process," stated Knox White, Mayor of Greenville.
