TRINITY COUNTY, Texas — Three workers died Wednesday after being exposed to toxic gas while working in a manhole in Trinity County.
Fire Chief Jason Oliphant of Montgomery County ESD 1 told CW39 that emergency crews were called around 5 p.m. and used self-contained breathing apparatus to assist in recovering the men, who were found unconscious and later confirmed dead.
The incident prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order for a quarter-mile radius until officials determined the hydrogen sulfide gas was contained within the sewer system. Montgomery County ESD 1’s Dive and Technical Rescue Team assisted in the recovery using specialized self-contained breathing equipment.
