WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — A green sea turtle named Sunflower that ended up stranded on Cape Cod last November is getting a second chance at life.

Mystic Aquarium released Sunflower back into the ocean at Weekapaug Beach in Westerly on Wednesday.

At the time of Sunflower's rescue, the turtle was cold stunned and suffering from superficial frostbite and a flipper fracture.

The nonprofit aquarium said it released 22 sea turtles at Jekyll Island in Georgia back in April, but Sunflower needed more time to rehabilitate.

Sarah Callan, the aquarium's animal rescue program manager, noted that the program relies on the support of the community.

"Every rescued animal ... requires specialized care and resources, so donations are essential to keep our programs running," Callan said in a press releas
