Calling all green thumbs: Colorado Springs is selling up to 3,500 surplus plants until noon Saturday.

The plant sale is taking place outside the city greenhouse run by Colorado Springs' horticulture division, a small entity within the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department that grows plants that decorate city land.

The city will use the funds from the surplus sale to help the department build an outdoor education area next to the greenhouse to hold gardening classes and lectures. City horticulturist Alex Crochet said the facility will have fabric shade sails for the roof covering a cluster of picnic tables.
