MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Monongalia County Environmental Health Department is advancing its efforts to prevent the spread of rabies among wildlife, specifically by providing vaccines to local animals.

These vaccines are given through "green baits," which are meant to be found and digested by wildlife in wooded areas around Monongalia County. Experts have said that rabies cases have gone down since the introduction of these baits.

“The height of our rabies cases back in 2019, when we had about twenty. And since we have been picking up doing more handbaiting this year, we have only seen two cases, one was the USDA did a surveillance study and it was positive for rabies.
