Ever since his arrest for a vicious attack on a random motorist, Jose Lopes-Cajina hasn’t wanted to tell anyone who he was or where he came from.
But after Ontario Court Justice George Orsini sentenced him to a total of eight years for aggravated assault, Lopes-Cajina, 22, called his defence lawyer, Keli Mersereau, to the prisoner’s box and quietly pointed to a man at the back of the courtroom.
Mersereau told Orsini it was Lopes-Cajina’s father.
This was the first time in more than two years that Lopes-Cajina, who pleaded guilty months ago, had identified anyone in his personal orbit, seemingly choosing to stay as anonymous as possible since the daylight attack on Richmond Row on March 21, 2023.
