SPOKANE, Wash. – Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center confirmed two measles cases in children recently seen at their facility. One case involved a 6-week-old baby boy who visited the emergency room on August 13 for respiratory issues.
The baby's mother, who chose to remain anonymous, explained the exposure.
"That virus was airborne for up to two hours. It's viral. They said that they didn't know at that point the child had the measles, but that's how we were exposed," she said.
After their visit, the hospital notified the mother about the potential exposure. Initial tests for the mother and baby came back negative, but doctors ran additional tests due to the child's symptoms. Providence confirmed that these tests returned positive for measles.
