NEW ORLEANS —

In the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has transformed its educational landscape by investing $2 billion in rebuilding and reimagining school buildings across the city.

This includes a $54 million construction project at Landry High School that began months after the storm. Advertisement

"Over half of the schools were built pre-World War II. And so, many of them were falling down. They did not have capacity for current technology. Termites here in Louisiana had torn them apart," said Torin Sanders, who was the Orleans Parish School Board president in 2005.

Before the storm hit, Sanders sought federal assistance for new school buildings, meeting with a Louisiana senator.
