CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) - The Louisiana Lieutenant Governor during Hurricane Katrina and later New Orleans Mayor, Mitch Landrieu, spoke during the third day of the SOAR Summit on Thursday.
Friday, Aug. 29 marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall in Louisiana, one of the costliest and deadliest storms in U.S history. More than 1800 people died.
“Katrina destroyed everything that we knew and that we loved in the blink of an eye,” Landrieu said. “Everything we knew was gone, 80% of our city was underwater.”
Landrieu spoke to participants about the similarities of Kentucky and Louisiana, and how both regions continue to define resilience in the face of hardships.
