DOVER, Ohio (WJW) - An incident that led some Dover residents to shelter in place Wednesday night is being investigated as a hoax, according to the Tuscarawas County sheriff.

Government officials initially took to social media just before 9 p.m., urging residents on Canal Street and East Front Street to stay inside amid "an ongoing law enforcement situation."

In an update just before 9:30 p.m., officials confirmed that the situation has been cleared and residents no longer need to shelter in place. The post said officials will provide more details in the near future.

Wednesday night, Sheriff Orvis Campbell confirmed that the incident is believed to be a swatting hoax.

FOX 8 reached out Dover police for more information.
