WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sides Kvam said it took the entire community coming together to heal after a shooting at Mount Tabor High School in 2021. At the time, he was just a sophomore.
News of a deadly shooting in Minnesota brought back those same emotions nearly four years later.
September 1, 2021, started out like any other day at Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem.
"It wasn't gloomy outside. It was just a normal day. It felt nice out, fall in North Carolina," Kvam said.
Things quickly took a turn for the worst when police said Maurice Evans Jr. shot and killed fellow student William Miller Jr. just after lunchtime.
Kvam, in 11th grade at the time, said it happened only 50 feet from his classroom.
