Cambridge city council will debate a motion next week that asks the provincial government to bring back limits on rent increases.

Moved by Coun. Adam Cooper, the motion is to protect renters from sudden and steep rent increases that make it hard for people to stay in their homes.

The provincial rent control rules were removed in 2018 for new rental units, causing problems for many tenants, the motion says.

“Without limits to rent increases, many Cambridge renters will also be at risk of being priced out of their own homes,” the motion reads. “Unlimited rent increases can be used as a tool by landlords acting in bad faith to remove existing tenants in order to replace them with new tenants at increased rates.”
