Consumers looking to take advantage of Labor Day weekend to do some shopping or pick up supplies for a home project are in luck.

While banks and United States Postal Service offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, most retail stores will be open on the holiday. Grocery stores and restaurants will largely remain open as well.

The federal holiday celebrates "the social and economic achievements of American workers" and is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday "to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being," according to the U.S. Department of Labor .
