BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A new connection between Vermont and New York opened on this day in history.
It was August 29, 1929, a day of celebration along the shores of Lake Champlain.
Governors from both states and some 40,000 people turned out for the dedication of the new Champlain Bridge.
The 2,200-foot span was the first roadway across the lake connecting Chimney Point in Vermont with Crown Point in New York.
It took 15 months to build at a cost under a million dollars.
It would last for 80 years before being closed for safety reasons in 2009 and replaced two years later with a new bridge.
