After leasing the popular green space on Margaret Street for almost seven years, Cambridge council will vote Tuesday on whether to purchase Civic Legion Park for $4 million, officially bringing it into city ownership.
The 2.28-acre site at 575 Margaret St. , at the corner with Westminster Drive North, is owned by Branch 126 of the Royal Canadian Legion and leased by the city since 2018 for a nominal fee.
The space is used as a park and features a playground, baseball diamond and parking lot.
If the deal is approved, the city will pay $4 million plus applicable taxes and set aside up to $100,000 for extra costs such as legal fees, planning fees, permits or demolition if needed. The money would come from the Parkland Cash in Lieu Reserve Fund.
