WALTON, Ky. —

Neighbors here are pretty shaken up after a shooting in an apartment complex in Walton, Kentucky left two deputies hospitalized.

Neighbors had to be evacuated overnight from their homes as deputies and a SWAT team tried to get the gunman out of his home. Advertisement

Nearby businesses were also told to shelter in place as it all unfolded.

SWAT members deployed gas canisters to try and get the suspect out.

Some neighbors told WLWT they could still smell some of it when they returned home early Friday morning.

Deputies used drones and other technology to try and get in touch with the suspect, but say he wouldn't communicate.

Deputies say they learned the suspect took his own life after barricading himself inside for hours.
