CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A fire broke out overnight Friday in Clayton, damaging two homes and completely destroying one. Both residents escaped unharmed.

Investigators told Eyewitness News the fire started at the back of the home that was destroyed. A neighbor noticed an orange glow through her blinds and saw her neighbor's porch on fire, prompting her to call for help.

The homeowner was alerted by her fire alarm and managed to escape with her dog. Unfortunately, she was not able to find her cat.

Debra Hendricks, whose home was damaged, described the experience as terrifying.

"I've always heard you don't have minutes, you have seconds, and that is so true," she said.

Despite the panic, Hendricks expressed relief that the situation wasn't worse and noted that she has insurance.
