At St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec from July 1 to 27, there were 3089 asylum claims — five times more than in the same period last year. Most were from Haiti, Venezuela, the United States, Colombia, and Pakistan.
Currently, this is mainly a problem for the Montreal area. Half of asylum seekers reside in Quebec. However, the problem could in future easily spread across Canada.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew indicated his willingness last year to accept some asylum seekers from Quebec, but only if the federal government offered financial support. I believe that all these persons should have been cleared by a physician before leaving Quebec for Manitoba or other provinces.
